Today was the first day of Red Snapper and Gag Grouper season. Red Snapper Season is June 1st- August 1st 2019. The weather was beautiful and calm seas and of course the Red Snapper where biting. The Grouper and Amberjack where biting pretty good too as you can see in the Photo.

The Scamp Grouper and Amberines bite is on fire! We’re reeling in plenty of Amberines and Scamp on our 8- and 10-hour charter fishing trips. Amberines, similar to Amberjack but smaller, offer a great fight and are excellent eating. Scamp, part of the grouper family, are typically found in deep waters of 200 feet or more. While they may not put up the toughest fight, they more than makeup for it with their incredible flavor—some of the best in the Gulf. Targeting these prized fish requires a 10- to 12-hour charter fishing trip.

The spring fishing season continues to be great. It’s May now and we are catching Blackfin Tuna, Cobia, King Mackerel, Amberines (Jack’s), Scamp Grouper and Triggerfish. There have been a few Wahoo and Mahi-Mahi caught too. The longer charter fishing trips have offered all of the above fish and the shorter trips are offering King Mackerel and reef fish, Vermillion Snappers, etc.

Destin Summer Fishing

The summer charter fishing begins with the opening of Red Snapper and Gag Grouper season. The Red Snapper season always opens June 1st and runs til mid to end of July. Gag Grouper remains open until mid Nov. Red Snapper limit is 2 per person and range from 3 lbs to 30 lbs. Everyone wants to go fish for Red Snapper and this is our busiest time of the year, so if you want to catch Red Snapper you better call now.

Inshore Fishing

Big schools of bait move in and the inshore fishing for King Mackerel heats up, along with Tarpon fishing. The King Mackerel run from 7 to 50 lbs. and they are a blast to catch on light tackle. Yes we catch Tarpon here, not on flats like in the Keys but along our second sandbar. I have caught several Tarpon on my big charter boat, we sight fish for schools of them, and cast to them. Average Tarpon I have released here is 100 lbs with some as big as 200 lbs. Now that is a fight on 30 lb tackle, not to mention all the jumps you get.

Offshore waters are warming up so here come the Wahoo, Bull Dolphin (Mahi-Mahi). Most gulf charter boats troll lures for Wahoo when heading out and again heading home.

Offshore Trolling

The offshore waters of Destin Fl offer a variety of Marlin, Blue Marlin, White Marlin, Sailfish and Swordfish. We look for weed lines that will hold bait and troll down them often catching Bull Dolphin and Wahoo. The Marlin will cruise up and down weed lines too looking for bait and then it is Hook Up time, Marlin on.
